New Ships Blog

Photo Update – May 2011

09/05/2011

The blog has been a little bit quiet recently, but with work well underway to fit-out the internal spaces of the Spirit of France the truth is, at this stage, there’s not much to see that we didn’t already see with her predecessor.

However, with less than 5 months left until she arrives in Dover I’ve included our latest photos to show you how she is coming along….

View from the outside passenger deck, not what you'd typically expect the view in a shipyard to look like!

Had a really good journey back to UK on S of B Sat 18 Sept 16.00hr. It was quite rough but stabalizers good. So didn’t suffer seasickness without travel sickness tablets.

Just one complaint public announcements were useless, to quiet and unclear. Many other people were commenting they couldn’t hear.

We shall definitely travel on the S of B again

When she’s supposed to arrive in Dover and Calais, please? do you know the date?

    • P&O Ferries Admin says:

Hi Nico, We’re still a little unsure on the arrival date as much will depend on the impending sea trials. The yard will close for the summer and we will look to take delivery when the yard resumes work in early September. Arrival in Dover will be some time after that.

If I remember well, I tried very nice and comfortable seats on the SOB on deck 8 at the front of the ship,I even took a photo! but I must admit I am not very often sitting during crossings : always something to do or see in the ship or on the sea, and that keeps me moving all the time. I also appreciate being able to sit in an open deck at the back and watching the White Cliffs getting smaller and smaller on my way back to France while I am having a nice drink. That is also why I appreciate the vast space at the back of SOB. I am also waiting for SOF and will have a last trip on that good old Pride of Calais in September, as I did a few months ago for the ‘Pride of Dover’.

S.O.P. Is a fantastic ferry, the facilities are wonderfull, seating in all areas is very comfortable. The Brasserie serves excellent food, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.Roll on next October when we travel again on The S.O.P. or perhaps its sister ferry.S.O.F.

When is the last sailing of the pride of Calais?

    • P&O Ferries Admin says:

Hi Joe, The final sailing has not been confirmed yet. With September being a busy month for the company we do not yet know if the Spirit of France and Pride of Calais will replace one another or operate alongside each other for a little while.

I love the Spirit of Britain! I live in the States but always try to make a round trip when I travel over to the UK for business.
One quick question – my son loves flags and I would love to get him a full size P&O flag if possible – do you have any ideas how I could buy one?

Many thanks and I look forward to the Spirit of France!

  • David Massey says:

I would agree with the comment about the seats in The Spirit of Britain do not have any head support in most of their seats unlike the Pride of Dover & Calais, the lounge opposite the channel shop is still very comfortable. I have travel twice on the Spirit of Britain and found just one row of seats that had something like a head support and some confortable chairs in the rear bar near the sun deck. It is not all bad news but the furniture has the influence of Scandinavia.

  • Dominic says:

I like how the top car deck has been altered on the front bow spade, so it is off centre like on the SOB, i like how it’s been rounded off rather than leaveing a big gap like on the SOB which has a nice orange cone to stop cars falling off ;) also are any modifications being made to tell her apart from the “Britain”?? like the Dover had black paint between the windows and the Calais didnt

  • Viv SEYMOUR says:

The new ship is very good but I amnot looking forward to a rough crossing! The seats offer no head support…

  • D.Witherington says:

I do hope the layout of the vessel is better than its sister ship S.O.B.
which my Family having been on it 3 times do not find it user freindly, certainly not as good as the Calais & Dover vessels.

    • P&O Ferries Admin says:

Hi, The internal layout will be the same as the Spirit of Britain. I’m sorry you do not find it user friendly.

  • JEAN-MARIE FLORIN says:

Delighted to receive such good news. I was actually wondering how things were going, but as they say ‘No news is good news!’. I hope I can do the same as for ‘Spirit of Britain’ : get on the first Calais to Dover crossing… and maybe be admitted on the bridge!
